Launch of The 2013 BMW M6 Coupe

The M6 coupe launches for the 2013 model year, joining the convertible. After a two-year hiatus, the third generation of the M6 is back and making quite a powerful impression on the street. It boasts the most powerful engine ever outfitted in a BMW paired with a high-torque 7-speed M-Double Clutch. And just like its predecessor, its roof is molded from natural Carbon Fiber Composite for a more athletic stance.

The 2013 M6 has an athletic design, with powerfully taut surfaces, elegant lines, and precise contours. Its long hood and smooth bulging fender flares are impressive. Get in the cabin and you will find instrumentation that is clean and beautiful, with silver-rimmed analog gauges befitting of such a high-performance car. The Head-up Display is optional, and it’s so good that it should be a must with the fast M6 that needs your eyes on the road.

We were recently lucky enough to take a spin in the coupe. We visited BMW Towson, a car dealer serving Baltimore, and took the M6 to the streets of Maryland. The M6 Coupe uses an inline six engine, and we immediately noticed its smooth power and great acceleration. A number of pioneering technologies make this engine possible. An electronically controlled water pump helps increase power output. BMW’s patented Valvetronic system offers better fuel efficiency. And to save weight, BMW used a groundbreaking innovation that they were the first to use in a production car – an engine block made of a lightweight composite magnesium/aluminum.

M6 Coupe

The 2013 BMW M6 breaks new ground with acceleration from 0 to 60 in four seconds. The car can be programmed to more than 200 combinations of suspension, throttle, transmission, steering, and traction settings. In summary…the 2013 M6 delivers racecar performance on the track, or can be used as an everyday car.

The 2013 BMW 5 Series: A Blend of Artistry, Agility, and a Shot of Adrenaline

For 2013, the 535i and 550i can now have the BMW Individual Composition Package, which includes extended leather upholstery, 19-inch alloy wheels, Alcantara headliner material and Shadowline trim. New standalone BMW Individual options include wood inlays on the steering wheel, and unique paint and wood trim. Updates to the navigation system include revised submenus, weather information and optional Google search.

The 2013 BMW ActiveHybrid 5 combines the turbocharged 6-cylinder with a 54-horsepower electric motor to make an impressive combined 335 horsepower. The BMW M5 features a 560-horsepower V8 and is available with a 6-speed manual transmission or 7-speed double-clutch paddle-shifting transmission. The 2013 BMW 550i uses a V8 in the 550i. With minimal frontal overhang and muscular flanks that seem shaped by this car’s dynamic forward thrust, the 5 Series looks like it is always on the move. All three BMW 5 Series sedans are distinguished for their aggressive styling and driving character. The 5 Series models excellent dynamics and agility make them assertively proactive and manageable when faced with the necessity of an emergency avoidance maneuver, making them excellent family sedans.

2013 BMw

We stopped by DC’s top BMW dealer – BMW Rockville to take a test drive in a 2013 BMW 550i Sedan. While driving the 550i we found it was highly competent and balanced, with exceptional poise and pace. It was controllable at high levels of acceleration, stopping and cornering well. These BMW models use a superb 8-speed automatic transmission. Because the top two gears are overdrives, keeping freeway revs down, the fuel mileage is helped. Also, the aluminum doors, hood, front side panels and suspension components keep weight down.

While the driving dynamics of BMW models are always impressive, so is the cabin. Step into a 5 Series, and you will find a handsome and contemporary interior. Instrumentation is comprehensive and flawless. Gauges are about perfect to look at and read. Those who see themselves as having reached a certain level of luxury should be satisfied in this stylish cabin. BMW’s fourth-generation iDrive cockpit-management system is much easier to use than previous versions. The 2013 models get further streamlining and simplification to the navigation and infotainment programs.

Z4 Roadster Getting the Big 4 Cylinder

BMW has just announced that the latest and greatest car they will be launching on US soil will be come fed with a 4 cylinder motor.  The engine will of course be turbo charged, capable of a very respectable 240 horse power.  The motor will power the new Z4, which will be featured at the New York Auto Show.

Of note is that the 4 cylinder being introduced, sDrive28i, is the first inline 4 cylinder produced by BMW in 10 years.  Coupled with the 6-speed transmission and 260 lb ft of torque it should be chipper enough in the small roadster, but is that what buyers are wanting?  Is the industry striving for smaller displacement and more forced induction?

What would you rather drive, a potent 6 cylinder or a wound tight 4 banger?

BMW Recall For Brake Problems

BMW has announced a recall for over 190,000+ cars in North America because of brake problems.  The recall applies to only V8 and V12 models, which include the M 5, 6, and 7 series.  Furthermore, this recall includes cars made as early as 2002 in the Rolls-Royce lineup.

Making matters worse is that the BMW recall may affect almost an additional 150,000 more cars worldwide, bringing the total to more than 300,000 cars recalled (actual numbers have not yet been verified by BMW -ed).  The problem stems from a possible leak in the brake line, which then leads to a loss in power braking.  Anyone who has ever driven a car with out power brakes can attest to the difficulty of stopping and need to adjust driving habits.  It’s a needed recall, if even a small number of BMW’s are affected.

It may take up to 2 weeks for recall notices to be sent out, but if you are experiencing braking issues now, get to the dealership immediately.  Of all the things to go wrong with a vehicle, the brakes are the last place you want to take any chances.  BMW dealerships should already be equipped to handle the problem, but will be briefed on a replacement process, along with stocking brake parts to arrive shortly.

Amazingly enough, this is only a voluntary recall in Britain, where only 10,000 vehicles have so far been affected.  We’ll monitor complaints to see how far this recall affects the US and other countries.  Most likely this initial recall notice has been put in place to avoid any sort of fine, much like the fine Toyota received for not announcing a recall sooner.

2011 BMW 5 Series By Hamann

Thinking about purchasing a modified BMW, consider the 5-Series complete with exterior and interior tuning by Hamann.  Hamann is a BMW tuner that specializes in performance and appearance tuning of all BMW cars.  For example, this BMW 5 Series has been worked over with special Hamann side skirts, spoiler, center valance, and even a roof spoiler.

Inside the 2011 Hamann BMW 5 Series is lots of carbon fiber trim, custom floor mats, aluminum pedals, and more Hamann badges than you can shake a stick at.  Granted, its all tastefully done, but the carbon fiber has been overused, every insert converted, and the dash is a maze of fiber.

Other than the additional goodies a la body kits, Hamann also lowered the car by up to 1.5″.  The effect is really amazing, giving the ass end a bow legged look and the side a low profile.  With the extra large rims and high performance tires, the exterior look is complete.  Hamann does an awesome job with the BMW, making it unique, and worthy of the price.
