Subaru WRX Snow Tracks

Snow tires not cutting it out in Colorado so far this year?  Perhaps Subaru has the answer for you, at least in theory, a WRX STi equipped with snow tracks!  And not just any WRX, a 400 horse power version was shown at the 2009 Specialty Equipment Manufacturers Association (SEMA).

Right now the snow track WRX is a modified rally version of Subaru’s popular all wheel drive car.

Under the hood, the ultimate Subaru snow machine sports a 2.5-liter,
4-cylinder, turbocharged and intercooled STI engine tuned with a MOTEC M800
ECU. The engine, which kicks out approximately 400 hp and 400 lb.-ft. of
torque, is teamed with a KAPS 5-speed close-ratio dog-engagement gearbox and
the Subaru programmable DCCD (Driver Controlled Center Differential) all-wheel
drive system. Employing custom machined hubs, the drivetrain – which has been
dropped three inches – is mated to Mattracks 105M1-A1 rubber track conversion.
The car also features Group N competition rally dampers made by EXE-TC.

I’m not a huge fan of foreign cars, tuners, or even rally inspired sedans, but the new WRX liftback got my attention.  It’s rare that a car peaks my interest without the assitance of a throaty V8.  But how could anyone even slightly interested in good engineered performance from a handling perspective.  Not to mention a platform that has  been tried and true on and off the track.

Enter the 09 Subaru WRX STi ‘liftback’, which is a nice way of saying a 5-Door hatchback curve cutter.  And that throaty V8 sound I mentioned earlier, think turbo charged 4 cylinder capable of 300+ horsepower at 6,000 rpms.  Knowing it’s not all about the horsepower, can you imagine they are pumping over 290 ft lbs of torque through this light weight aluminum power box?

What has reviewers singing the praise of this rally worthy WRX is it’s ability to tune itself to the driver.  That’s right, the 09 WRX STi is capable of adapting to the type of driving or abuse the driver puts the WRX through.  Furthermore the 09 WRX is equipped with a control center where you can tweak the performance at the flip of a switch.  There are 3 options that allow for different types of clutch and throttle response, which can make getting groceries a lot more exciting.

Although price can be relative, I think of all the other vehicles that could be had for a $40k price tag.  Hell, taking a $20k car and dumping $20k in modifications would be more my style, but I don’t think the STi is targeted at me.  Rather the European market, with money to burn, and more curves to carve.

Subaru has plans of ‘boosting’ the Subaru WRX Impreza’s power output for their 2009 model year.  A new buyer can expect stock gains of up to 41 horsepower over the 08 WRX model, which will place the horsepower at around 265.  This kind of power numbers will make the WRX just under it’s STi brethren.

As usual, all wheel drive is standard on the 09 Subaru WRX.  In addition, the same 2.5 liter boxer engine will also be used, making this one sexy four door.  The additional power is just one of the changes coming in 2009 to the WRX, there will also be a number of cosmetic differences as well.  The one I’m looking most too is the addition of Gun Metal Gray rims, as seen in the picture below.
