2010 Hybrid SUVs Have Something For Everyone

Hybrid SUVThere is no doubt that there are more choices, than ever, from which to choose if you are looking to buy a hybrid SUV in 2010. This, along with the new hybrid technology, is certain to make these hybrids some of the most popular models ever.

Leading the list of the least expensive of these models is the Saturn Vue Hybrid. It has one of the smallest engines, 2.4 liters 4-cylinders, and also offers the lowest fuel economy with 25 mpg in the city; 32 mpg on the highway. The Saturn offers the largest gas tank capacity with 18.3 gallons. The SUV comfortably seats five people. If your family does a lot of towing this SUV is capable of pulling up to 1500 pounds.

Another of the less expensive SUV hybrids is the Ford Escape. It offers a 2.5 liter 4-cylinder engine. It can also seat five passengers. Although it is more powerful than the Saturn it offers the best fuel economy with 31 mpg on the highway and 34 mpg in town. The 4-wheel drive gets 27 mpg on the highway and 29 mpg in town. The Escape also offers a limited edition featuring chrome and leather for an additional $2000.

The 2.5 liter 4-cylinder engine in the Mercury Mariner hybrid shares the same great fuel efficiency offered by the Ford Escape. It offers a 17-gallon gas tank. It also holds five people inside. It is available in both a 2-wheel and 4-wheel drive model. It offers the industry standard warranty of 3-years or 30,000 miles.

The Toyota Highlander Hybrid offers a larger, 3.3 liter 6-cylinder engine that can carry seven people inside. It can get 25 mpg on the freeway and 27 mpg in the city. The tank holds 17.2 gallons of gasoline. The 4-wheel drive model is capable of towing up to 3500 pounds. Like the Escape, if you pay an additional $2000 you will have a leather interior with heated front seats, a satellite radio along with a 6-disc in-dash CD changer and other features.

The last hybrid SUV, in this class, is the Lexus RX. This luxurious SUV offers a 3.5 liters 6-cylinder engine and it still gets good mileage with 32 mpg in the city and 28 mph on the freeway. It is available in both a 2-wheel and 4-wheel drive. It offers a bumper to bumper 4 year/50000 miles warranty – of the five least expensive hybrid SUV’s it offers the best warranty.

Escape Hybrid

Generally attractive and hybrid don’t go in the same sentence, but Ford has done a wonderful job with their Escape Hybrid.  The Ford Escape Hybrid is a plug-in style hybrid, adorning an SUV body.  Imagine that a hybrid that seats more than 4 small kids and looks great driving down the road.

The bad news is that you won’t find the Escape Hybrid actually on the road until possibly 2012.  Not to say Ford doesn’t have a running model as we speak, some lucky journalists were able to test drive the Escape Hybrid up to 10 mph at the Detroit Auto Show.  But, it’s real hard to road test a 120 mpg SUV without going over 10 mph, and drivin garound in a basement.

Yuma Police are getting a sneak peak at the Escape Hybrid and have purchased 2 new SUV’s to put into patrol duty.  This cost Yuma Police an estimated $50,000 each, which includes all the police goodies like lights, safety equipment, etc.  Shouldn’t take too long to earn back that money with gas savings from the 120 mpg Escape Hybrid.

“We have taken them out and put them through the paces,” said Sgt. George Mitchell, lead driving instructor for YPD. “They are comparable to the Crown Victorias we are driving now, which is a pleasant surprise. The speed, handling and maneuverability is all there.”

According to Ford the plug-in Escape Hybrid becomes fully charged after about 6-8 hours and can be plugged into a 120v outlet.  This full-charge will deliver amazing gas mileage for about 30 miles, but then will revert back to typical hybrid fuel efficiency performance.

This would possibly be the first hybrid vehicle that I would buy, for personal use.  I love the Escape Hybrid lines, utility, and promise of being able to pass more gas stations.

Lexus Ad Banned By Climate Nazis

I try to leave my politics out of my automotive blog, but this news story takes the cake.  Apparently a recent Lexus ad, displaying it’s new RX 400h SUV hybrid, upset some environmentalists and got it banned.  According to those opposed to the advertisement it created an appearance that the Lexus SUV did not have an impact on the environment, or at least it was cleaner than it really was.

The Advertising Standards Authority was responsible for removing the ad amongst a number of complaints.  The primary complaint was that the SUV caused ‘little to no harm’ to the environment, rather than just being a good choice in todays economy and environment.  Hell, after all this SUV hybrid goes above and beyond current standards, so I’m not sure why such a rash action on behalf of the ASA would be taken.

People who complain about stuff like this need to get out and get a job.  Seriously.
