Volt Needs High Gas Prices

Green News

The Chevy Volt and other electric, hybrid, or alternative fuel vehicles need high gas prices.  Without the threat looming of $4 per gallon gasoline it makes it difficult to stomach a $40,000 investment, in some cases.  Obviously the higher the fuel prices the shorter time it takes to break even and to have the electric car start actually saving you money.

Looking at it this way makes me look like I hate the environment, but that's not the case.  I'm all for doing my part to keep the Earth green and blue, but not at the cost of being in debt up to my eye balls without any return.  There must be a breaking point, where investment shows return, even when talking about green technology.  So, I guess this idea only applies to those who aren't independently wealthy green freaks.

No doubt if fuel prices remain relatively low it will devastate the huge investment companies like Chevrolet have made with the Volt.  Everyone was able to jump on board the research and development when gas prices were high, but what will happen financially to the company now that sales will be directly effected by the fuel prices?  Surely there will be more financial incentive to buy a new all electric car or at least lower the expected price all across the board.

I hope that we will see falling vehicle prices on all cars, trucks, suv's, and not just the special niche green market.  The idea that a vehicle should cost 1/2 as much as most peoples homes is getting to be a little bit ridiculous.  Let's start by slashing that all electric Chevy Volt price.

2010 Volt Pics

Tuesday, August 19th, 2008

Chevrolet has released 2 teaser pictures for their upcoming green vehicle the 2010 Volt.  This will be the first electric vehicle for the domestic manufacturer and this is NOT a hybrid.  Furthermore, if you can't get away with charging this green machine you can always put tried and true gasoline in the tank to get by.  It's a win/win/win.

Here are the released photos from Chevy on the 2010 Volt.

2010 Chevrolet Cruze

Monday, July 14th, 2008

Chevrolet has announced that they will be brining a new itty bitty car to the US, the 2010 Chevy Cruze.  This new ankle biter is expected to produce up to 140 horsepower and do so making 40 miles per gallon.  Personally, I'll believe this when I see it, since emissions equipment will have a huge toll on what that little engine can do.  USNews reports that the Chevrolet Cruze will be equipped with a 1.4 liter turbo charged engine.

There are some preliminary spy pics of the Chevrolet Cruze in European markets, but expect it to change before the 2010 US release date.

Bigger Incentives For Bigger Gas Guzzlers

Tuesday, June 10th, 2008

I can't help but notice the influx of large SUV's and big trucks in used car lots and peoples front yards.  I mean, gas is bad yeah, but there always be a need to pull something or haul a ton of dirt, so now is the time to buy.  GM and Chevrolet feels the same way and are showing it by offering some bigger incentives to match the girth of the vehicle.

Previously GM was offering up to $4,000 in cash incentives to new SUV and big truck buyers, but sales just keep falling.  Now GM has announced up to $6,000 in incentives for vehicles like the Chevrolet Silverado.  Seems like a good deal to me, but I already have a 9 mpg SUV with a 5.9l V8...taking up residence in my front yard.

2009 Chevy Traverse

Thursday, February 7th, 2008

What has taken Chevrolet so long to bring this mid-size SUV to market? Everyone else has a competing model in the uni-body structuring, interior size, performance, but now the 2009 Chevy Traverse will carry a $28,000 base price when it finally hits the market.

Looks like a very elegant mid-size SUV worthy of any urban traveler. Expect upwards of 280 horse power from the 3.6l V6 power plant.

2008 Chevy SUV Hybrids

Thursday, February 7th, 2008

I'm tired of people trying to make me feel guilty about driving an SUV and to be honest I feel a little guilty using as much gas as I do. However, an SUV is such a wonderful utility vehicle that would require me to own multiple vehicles (thus being worse on the environment) than just owning one that consumes a little more than the average auto. Thanks to Chevy it may be a moot point.

Chevrolet announced that they will be releasing the  Tahoe and Yukon in Hybrid versions. This means that I can now have the towing power and capacity to do what I normally do, but now with a environmentally conscious engine!

It's gonna cost me though, in the neighborhood of $50,000+ but at least it's an option. Check out what the boys at the Boston Herald have to say about this leap in hybrid technology.

2008 Chevy Uplander

Tuesday, October 9th, 2007

It's another crossover from the people at Chevrolet and they are deeming it 'BOLD'. I'm not so sure I would consider the styling cues of the new Chevy Uplander as 'bold'. It looks like a beefy minivan to me, but I'm not into that style anyway. I'm sure it rides just like a sedan, as they claim, but at what cost?

Chevy Uplander

This is going to be a front-wheel drive vehicle with a mild 3.9l V6. Amazingly enough the engine is expected to pump out 245 horse power and be available in a FlexFuel model. So, for all you fans of yellow you can get one that accepts that E85 go juice.
