Saleen Challenger

Hard to believe, but Steve Saleen has finally stepped away from just customizing Ford Mustangs and has now put his name on a Challenger based SMS-570.  There have been reports of green and blue-gray Saleen Challenger combinations seen in the wild, modified so far as to be a completely different type of car.  Starting with the suspension, Saleen has updated the Challenger to make it handle and perform completely different than one rolling off of Dodge’s manufacturing floor.

The SMS-570 Challenger is priced crazy high for the type of vehicle the customization is attached to.  The price jumps even further if you want a custom green paint job, which adds another $18,000 to the already $70,000 price of customization.  That means, for a new Dodge Challenger, touched by the hand of Saleen, expect to hand out almost $100,000.  Steeeeep!?

So, what do you get on the SMS-570 compared to a normal Challenger?  First of all the base engine Saleen has worked with is the 5.7 Hemi V8, only he’s added a 296 supercharger.  The combination is potent and helps deliver a whopping 500 horsepower and 500 lb ft of torque.  As mentioned above, the SMS-570 also comes with all new suspension, drive train, and aero dynamics to complete the Saleen treatment.

I certainly don’t feel it’s worth the extra cash for the modifications listed on the MSRP sheet.  Furthermore, for his first foray away from the Mustang, I won’t be surprised if this project falls on it’s face before it even takes off.  Other than a handful of collectors, is there a market for Saleen modified Challengers, even in a step-down offering other than the SMS-570?

2010 Dodge Challenger

[ad#Google Adsense]The 2010 Dodge Challenger can best be described as innovative, powerful, and capable.  Despite it’s muscle car heritage, the 2010 Challenger is capable of being mild or extreme, depending on the engine setup you choose.  Furthermore, the styling of the 2010 Challenger is just as versatile, offering special MOPAR exterior/interior upgrades to suit the buyers personality.

2010 Challenger Engine Options

The 2010 Challenger comes in three different power offerings, the most mild is the 3.5 liter V6.  Amazingly enough the little engine that could is capable of producing 250 horsepower and 250 lb ft of torque.  The smallest engine available for the 2010 Challenger is can only be matched with the Challenger SE model.

Next step up in engine displacement and power is the optional 5.7 liter HEMI, which pumps out a very capable 372 horsepower and 400 lb ft of torque.  The most popular engine setup boasts more horsepower than the same year Mustang GT and even better fuel economy.  This comparison is possible due in part to the 2010 Challengers variable cam timing and dual ignition(2 spark plugs per cylinder).

The big daddy of engine options for the 2010 Challenger is the 6.1 liter HEMI.  The massively displaced beast produces a naturally aspirated 425 horsepower and 420 lb ft of torque.  This power house muscle car motor is only available in the 2010 Challenger SRT model.  It’s a fitting motor for such a legendary car, the 6.1 liter features an aggressive cam and reworked heads to maximize airflow.

2010 Challenger Suspension

The new Challenger is a beautiful car, possibly described as buxom when cruising down the road.  It’s large, in charge, but can’t possibly handle like a sports car…right?  Wrong!  The suspension on the 2010 Challenger and braking system has been reworked to offer the best handling and stopping power of any car in it’s class.

First of all the 2010 Challenger offers oversized Brembo Brakes.  Complete with vented front and rear rotors, these brakes offer bench mark braking.

Next the 2010 Challenger SRT8 offers a standard performance tuned suspension.  Paired with the Challenger’s Electronic Stability Program, which helps monitor over or under-steer, the driver will experience one of the best mannered muscle cars on the market.  Of course the ESP can be switched off too, so tire scorching burnouts can take place. 😉

Add Aggressive MOPAR Looks To Your Challenger

The all new retro styled Dodge Challenger not muscle enough for you?  Fear not, ringing in the New Year, MOPAR has released an appearance package that puts the Challenger on steroids.  It’s a tasteful package that adds bold curves and a few sharp edges, making the Challenger look like it’s in motion even when parked.

Below is a list of the muscle styled goodies that will come with the MOPAR package.

  • New Hood with color matched scoop.
  • Aggressive rear spoiler.
  • Stripe Kit

Interior MOPAR Performance Appearance Package items.

  • MOPAR branded T Shifter.
  • Bright pedal kit.
  • Door-sill guards.
  • Premium floor mats
  • Car cover

Even for a list as impressive as this it comes with a pretty high price tag.  Expect to pay around $2,000 for the exterior Performance Appearance Package and in the neighborhood of $1,000 for the interior package.  With the aftermarket automotive industry being as experienced as it is I can’t imagine Dodge selling a lot of these.  But, for those that want to stick with the MOPAR brand, accept no substitutes.  Just don’t expect any more horsepower for your $3k investment. 😉

08 Dodge Challenger

08 Dodge Challenger

08 Dodge Challenger

The latest throwback muscle car is from Dodge and it wreaks of muscle, testosterone, and yes is another lady that makes my pants tight.  Dodge even managed to get the colors right and offer a selection to make anyone feel like a badass behind the wheel of the new 425 horsepower monster.  The new 08 Dodge Challenger comes in a very limited quantity of 6,400 units sporting the hemi v-8 engine.  My guess is the limited production is because of this v-8 Challenger only getting 13 miles per gallon.

Hey, if you are purchasing a new Challenger you aren’t worried about gas mileage anyways (at $40,000 SRT-8 sticker price), but if you are expect a girlified v-6 Challenger version in 09.

Gruesome 08 Challenger Details

Engine: 6.1-liter V-8 with 425 horsepower, 420 pound-feet of torque.

Transmission: Five-speed automatic.

Speed: 0 to 60 mph in 4.8 seconds.

Gas mileage per gallon: 13 city; 18 highway.

Retail Price: $41,310.

Sorry all you mullet sporting, mustache wearing goons, the manual transmission won’t be available until the 09 Challenger comes out this fall.  The way it looks, you better go ahead and get in line and pre-order your 09 Challenger, because these cars are hot.

$228,000 Dodge Challenger Sold on eBay

2008 Dodge Challenger SRT8Is there any question that the new 2008 Dodge Challenger will be a hot item? No, but Jesus Mary and Joseph, a special edition 2008 Challenger sold on eBay for $228,143.43…eeek! Granted, this special edition muscle car features a custom B5 blue paint scheme and comes complete with 2 VIP tickets to the Challenger 500 NASCAR race.

Sound expensive? Don’t worry, base model 2008 Challengers will sell in the neighborhood of $38,000, not cheap but a far cry from this eBay sticker. The new SRT8’s will come standard with a 5-speed automatic transmission, 6.1L Hemi engine worth 425hp and 420 ft-lbs of torque. I’d assume dealers will be selling these cars well over sticker, considering there will be a short suppy of 6,400 produced the first year.
