With its smooth pony car style and commanding horsepower, the Dodge Challenger scored a lead role in perhaps the most popular gearhead film ever: Vanishing Point in 1971, and its 1997 remake starring Viggo Mortensen. Since then, it has truly become an automotive icon. Decades later, the Dodge Challenger is back and better than ever, with a muscular V8 engine pair similar to older models but with a modern twist
Today’s Dodge Challenger is packed with safety features and sleek touches unlike its more macho predecessor. The V8 engine provides powerful acceleration, making it fit to be called the king of the road. Among all pony cars, drivers say the Dodge Challenger is the easiest to drive by far. True to its name, it literally challenged all other cars in its segment upon its return.
The latest Dodge Challenger is patterned after its big brother’s 1970s flair. Just like pony cars are supposed to look, the Challenger has a shortened fastback roof line profile and an elongated hood. However, down under, it is based on an abridged adaptation of the Dodge Charger’s platform. With liberal proportions and a split folding rear accommodation, the Dodge Challenger has remarkable baggage space and plentiful passenger room.
The latest Dodge Challenger, available at Calgary Dodge dealers, comes in three trims: the SE, R/T and the SRT8 392. The SE (base model) comes standard with a 3.6 liter V6 engine generating 305 horsepower and a five-speed automatic transmission. Meanwhile, the R/T/ comes with a 5.7 liter V8 engine delivering 372 horsepower, a limited slip differential, and a recalibrated steering system, with a choice between a five speed automatic and a six speed manual transmission. The SRT8 392 has similar transmission options and comes with a 6.4 liter V8 engine which can generate 470 horsepower. The top model includes a power bulge scooped hood, 20 inch forged aluminum wheels, a Bembo brake system, and firmer suspension.
Dodge Challengers of all trims, available at Calgary used car and new car auto malls, are equipped with stability control, an armada of airbags, and anti-lock brakes. Significant add-ons include a sunroof and a hard drive-based navigation system with music and video storage. The R/T can score some track pads for handling enhancement.
What is there not to like about the Dodge Challenger? Its acceleration is adequate in the V6 and remarkable with the V8s. Inside, the ride is hushed even at top speed, with minimal din and engine noise. The Dodge Challenger, available at top Calgary Ford and Dodge dealers, does a decent job of reining in all that mass.
